Magnitude 6.0 Earthquake Strikes Offshore Near Japan’s Noda Region

A strong magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck offshore near Japan’s eastern Noda region on Wednesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), raising concerns but prompting no tsunami warning.

The United States Geological Survey reported that a magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurred off the eastern coast of Japan near the Noda region. The tremor struck at a depth of approximately 19.3 kilometres, or nearly 12 miles, beneath the ocean floor.

Japanese authorities confirmed that there was no tsunami threat following the quake. While the shaking was felt in nearby areas, there were no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage.

The latest earthquake follows another seismic event recorded on November 30, when a magnitude 5.6 quake struck offshore near the Tokara Islands in southern Kagoshima Prefecture, on Japan’s southernmost main island of Kyushu. That quake occurred at around 5:12 pm local time and similarly did not trigger a tsunami alert.

The November 30 tremor was detected on Akusekijima Island and registered a level two on Japan’s seismic intensity scale, which ranges from zero to seven. The USGS reported that the epicentre of that quake was located roughly 20 kilometres northeast of the town of Wadomari, at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Japan sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a region known for frequent seismic activity due to tectonic plate movement. Authorities continue to monitor seismic conditions closely while urging residents to remain prepared for potential aftershocks.
