London Commemorates 20th Anniversary of 7/7 Attacks with Ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral

Today marks 20 years since the devastating terrorist attacks of July 7, 2005, which claimed the lives of 52 people and left hundreds more injured. In remembrance, a solemn memorial service was held at St Paul’s Cathedral, attended by survivors, families of the victims, emergency service workers, and city leaders.

The Lord Mayor of Westminster, Cllr Paul Dimoldenberg, and the Leader of Westminster City Council, Cllr Adam Hug, were among those who paid tribute to the victims and reflected on the strength and resilience of the city.

“This is a day when we remember those victims, the survivors and the bravery of bystanders and the emergency services,” said Cllr Adam Hug.
“It was a rush hour attack designed to bring fear to the City, but the terrorists did not defeat the spirit of ordinary people.”

Cllr Dimoldenberg echoed this message of unity and resilience:

“In the face of horror, our communities came together with compassion, resilience, and unity — showing the unbreakable spirit of this city.”
“Today I represent the City of Westminster at St Paul’s Cathedral to honour those we lost and affirm that London still stands strong.”

The coordinated bombings took place near Aldgate, Edgware Road, Russell Square, and Tavistock Square, hitting London’s public transport network during the morning rush hour in what became the deadliest terrorist incident on British soil since the 1988 Lockerbie bombing.

Today’s service not only honoured the lives lost but also served as a reminder of the bravery of first responders and the resilience of Londoners, who stood together in solidarity in the days and years that followed.
