Laura Anderson hits back at ‘disgusting’ claims baby was ‘sunburnt’ in Dubai bikini snap

A new mum who was cruelly “mum-shamed” after sharing a bikini photo while holding her two-month-old baby has hit back, labelling the uproar “disgusting”.

Laura Anderson, 34, who appeared on British reality show Love Island UK in 2019, made headlines around the world when fans claimed her daughter Bonnie appeared “sunburnt” in recent holiday snaps.

In the images, Anderson could be seen in a pink and orange bikini while cradling her bub on the sand during a holiday in Dubai.

The new mum was clearly wearing a black visor for sun protection while Bonnie, who was dressed in a nappy, had on a white floppy hat and orange sunnies.

“Too cool,” the TV star wrote when sharing the photos with her 1.5 million followers.

But while many labelled the sun-filled snaps “gorgeous”, it was reported by multiple British media that some had expressed their concern.

The comments, which were “swiftly deleted” by Anderson, claimed her baby appeared “red” from sun exposure, arguing Bonnie had been “sunburnt” by the scorching desert heat.

“Face looks red on baby but nice shot enjoy,” one wrote, the The Sunreported.

“Your baby looks sunburnt,” another said.

Some of the remarks “even accused Anderson of endangering her baby”, according to a report by Mail Online.

However Anderson, who welcomed Bonnie with ex-boyfriend Gary Lucy in September, has since clapped back, labelling the backlash “disgusting”.

“I’m a 34-year-old woman that lived in Dubai for 10 years,” she wrote on Instagram.

“My child is wearing factor 50, a hat and in the shade. She wore a full wetsuit in the pool under a UV canopy float.

“Nobody mum shamed me or even mentioned she was sunburned. I’m more than capable of looking after my child’s well-being.”

In a separate post, shared to her Instagram Stories, Anderson labelled the furore “a joke”, adding the backlash had “ruined my day”.

Anderson also shared a string of new photos, including one of Bonnie floating in the pool while completely under shade, wearing a bodysuit, and another of her on a sun lounger with a fan and sun protection supplies surrounding her.

Current health advice in Australia states sunscreen is not recommended for infants under six months of age.

This is because “babies aged under six months have highly absorptive skin”, the Cancer Council website explains, while the Australasian College of Dermatologist recommends minimising use of sunscreen on young bubs.

Instead, parents should protect babies and children’s skin with physical barriers such as wraps, clothing, hats and use shade as much as possible.

Many of Anderson’s fans defended her against the backlash, stating the “nasty comments” were uncalled for.

“Give this beautiful lady a break guys she knows what she doing so please stop with the nasty comments and be nice,” one said.

“Women who come here to comment on someone’s else baby … I have one question – who asked you??! Mind your own business ladies,” another agreed.

As one stated: “Give this beautiful lady a break guys she knows what she doing so please stop with the nasty comments and be nice.”

Anderson and her ex-partner split before Bonnie was born after meeting on popular UK reality show Celebs Go Dating last year.

While the pair are committed to co-parenting, fans have speculated they may be back together, prompting Anderson to comment in a post announcing Bonnie’s birth.

“Hi everyone, my name is Bonnie Rose Lucy Anderson. I was born 02/09/23 at 06.03am and weighed 6.10lbs,” an Instagram post read.

“My Mummy & Daddy are sooooo happy and in love with me, this is our first week together.

“I’m sorry it’s taken me some time to introduce myself, I hurt my mummy a little bit and scared my daddy too (oops) we’re all now recovering well at home.’

Laura finished the caption on the post with: “Please don’t question My Mummy & Daddy on their relationship – This.. is all about me.”
