“I know who I wouldn’t want to be playing against if I was playing.”
Martin will undergo precautionary scans on Sunday afternoon after a hamstring issue limited him to 40 minutes in the Panthers 42-0 thrashing of Cronulla.
Martin is confident he will be fit for Origin selection, telling this masthead on Saturday night: “It was just precaution. I was a bit tight. But I’ll be fine. I couldn’t feel anything out there, and there was no one incident. I’ll be ready to go.”
Rookie Blues coach Michael Maguire will name his first NSW Blues squad on Monday and has made clear that he wants players available for training from the beginning of camp. That stance seemingly put a line through Walker’s chances of retaining his spot from last year’s Origin III triumph given a low-grade calf strain ruled him out of playing for Souths this week.
Hornby, however, said the Indigenous veteran will attempt to train on Monday in a bid to prove his fitness.
“Cody is going to have to run on Monday, and we go from there,” interim South Sydney coach Ben Hornby said.
“If he runs on Monday and is no good, then he’s no good. If he runs on Monday and he’s okay, then you go the next step.”
Interim Eels coach Trent Barrett also confirmed that fellow NSW incumbent Mitchell Moses will return from a broken foot for Parramatta against Cronulla on Thursday night, but conceded naming him for NSW would be “a big ask” given the star halfback has been sidelined for two months.
More to come.
