A large-scale search is underway for a swimmer missing from a popular beach in Tasmania’s rugged northwest.
Emergency services were called to Somerset Beach near the Cam River at Somerset shortly after 2pm on Friday.
In a statement, Tasmania Police said the 22-year-old woman was seen to be having “difficulty in strong currents”.
“A search including Surf Life Saving Tasmania, a Police vessel, and a TasPorts vessel was undertaken,” they said.
The Westpac Rescue and police helicopters were also dispatched on Friday, alongside the Police Dive Squad.
The widespread search involving local police continued until dark, and was resumed about 8.30am on Saturday.
Police will be holding a press conference at the Somerset Surf Club on Saturday morning amid the renewed search.
Somerset Beach is located at the mouth of the Cam River between the northwest townships of Wynyard and Burnie
The beach and adjacent river are popular for fishing, swimming, and kayaking, and family leisure activities.
