Lamborghini axes V10 for 10,000rpm turbo V8 hybrid on Huracan successor

[ad_1]

The replacement for the Lamborghini Huracan V10 supercar will adopt a new twin-turbo V8 plug-in hybrid system capable of revving to 10,000rpm.

Lamborghini has confirmed years of rumours, reports and leaks that the successor to the Huracan supercar – which may be named Temerario – will axe the iconic V10 engine.

But in its place will be an all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 – not related to the engine in the Urus, as well as various Audis and Porsches – capable of revving to 10,000rpm, and aided by three electric motors and a plug-in hybrid battery pack.

The V8 engine alone develops 588kW/730Nm – 118kW/165Nm, or almost an entire Hyundai i30 worth of additional power and torque than the outgoing Huracan’s 5.2-litre V10.

Lamborghini is yet to confirm the total power output, but it is expected to be in excess of 700kW, once the power of the electric motors is added.

Due to be unveiled later this year, the new supercar will succeed the decade-old Huracan, and is the final Lamborghini to adopt hybrid power.

The new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 was developed in-house by Lamborghini, with a flat-plane crankshaft and 10,000rpm redline being one of the highest of any road-legal vehicle ever sold.

It produces 588kW from 9000-9750rpm, and 730Nm from 4000-7000rpm. Lamborghini says it has a power delivery “similar to that of a racing engine”.

One of the electric motors is mounted between the petrol engine and new eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, developing 110kW/300Nm.

The locations of the other two are yet to be confirmed, but if the larger V12 Revuelto is a guide, they may drive the front wheels.

All new series-production Lamborghinis since the Murciélago of 2001 have launched with all-wheel drive as standard.

Lamborghini says it placed particular focus on the V8’s sound, claiming “the characteristics of the new V8 intensify in a crescendo that at high revs reaches its peak in terms of volume and frequency content”.

The switch to a V8 marks the end of the road for V10 power in Lamborghini’s junior supercar, since the Gallardo was unveiled more than 20 years ago with a 5.0-litre unit, which grew to 5.2 litres for its 2008 facelift.

More details of the Lamborghini Huracan successor – codenamed LB634 – are due to be announced closer to its unveiling later this year.
