Kevin Malligan to return to Sydney after Bali scooter accident puts him in coma

[ad_1]

The family of a Sydney father left fighting for life in Bali following a shocking accident on a moped have shared a major update.

Kevin Malligan, 24, had been holidaying in Bali just weeks before the birth of his second child when he fell off his scooter and hit his head, leaving him on life support in BIMC Nussa Dua Hospital.

He suffered a brain bleed and a fracture to his neck, and is in an induced coma as he fights for life.

His wife Leah Malligan, 32 weeks pregnant, rushed to her husband’s side after the accident, flying over with Mr Malligan’s father and brother.

On Monday, the Malligan finally received much anticipated news, as doctors gave Mr Malligan medical clearance to be flown home for further emergency treatment.

Describing her situation as “surreal”, Ms Malligan told 7News: “It’s something that you just see in movies, and you hear of, but you just never think you’re going to be in that situation”.

With Mr Malligan’s father and brother also flying to his side, the couple’s two-year-old daughter, Ivy, has been cared for by remaining family members in Sydney.

The medivac flight is expected to cost more than $100,000, with family working to raise money for Mr Malligan’s existing extensive medical bills, which are only expected to grow.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by Jodie and Belinda French to help raise money for their son-in-law.

More than $86,000 has been raised so far.

Mrs Malligan told 7News she was overwhelmed by the public’s fundraising response.

“It just means the world,” she said.

“I never thought I’d be in this situation, and I’ve never been the type of person to ask for money or ask for help, but after seeing the condition he’s in and knowing I’m going to be giving birth in five or so weeks … it’s so important that he’s at home.”
