Kelaniya Duruthu Maha Perahera Scheduled for January 8–10, 2026

The annual Kelaniya Duruthu Maha Perahera of the historic Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara will take place on January 8, 9, and 10, 2026, temple authorities have announced.

Dating back to 1927, the Kelaniya Duruthu Perahera was initiated largely through the efforts of renowned philanthropist Don Walter Wijewardene. Over the years, it has grown into one of Sri Lanka’s most magnificent low-country religious and cultural processions, attracting thousands of devotees and spectators each year.

Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara holds immense religious significance as the site that commemorates The Buddha’s third historic visit to Sri Lanka. This sacred event is annually observed on Duruthu Poya in January, with the traditional Kelani Perahera symbolising the temple’s deep spiritual importance and rich cultural heritage.

The Perahera is organised under the guidance of the Chief Incumbent of Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, Venerable Professor Kollupitiye Mahinda Sangharakkhita Nayaka Thero, along with the President of the Dayaka Sabha, Dr. Saman Weerasinghe.

Ceremonial proceedings will commence with Agra Maha Panditha Venerable Professor Kollupitiye Mahinda Sangharakkhita Nayaka Thero, Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, ceremonially handing over the Sacred Relic Casket to the Chief Basnayake Nilame, Dhammika Attygalle. The Dathu Perahera of The Buddha will then be followed by the Devale Peraheras dedicated to God Vibeeshana, God Kataragama, and God Vishnu.

According to the announced schedule, the Udamaluwe Perahera will be held on January 8, the Sacred City Perahera on January 9, and the Grand Duruthu Maha Perahera on January 10. All processions will commence at 8.00 p.m.

Temple authorities also noted that a special viewing enclosure for foreign tourists will be arranged to allow visitors to witness this sacred and culturally significant event.
