Kandy, Sri Lanka – The historic Kandy Esala Perahera Festival 2025 concluded successfully on Saturday, marking the end of one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred and celebrated cultural events.
The closing ceremony took place at the President’s House in Kandy, where the Sannasa (Scroll of Memorandum) was formally handed over to President Anura Kumara Disanayake by the Chief Custodian of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Pradeep Nilanga Dela.
The festival’s final day featured the traditional Day Perahera, which paraded through the streets of Kandy after the four Devala Peraheras performed the early morning water-cutting ceremony (Diya Kapeema) at Getambe Diya Kapana Thota, following age-old rituals.
The Kandy Esala Festival began on 25 July with the ‘Kap Situweema’ ceremony, lighting up the city with vibrant processions and cultural displays. The previous evening witnessed the grand Esala Randoli Perahera, drawing thousands of spectators along the streets of Kandy.
The 2025 festival once again highlighted the rich heritage and spiritual traditions of Sri Lanka, fostering unity and devotion among all who participated.
