Sri Lankan batting sensation Kamindu Mendis has once again earned global recognition, winning the prestigious ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for September 2024.
Mendis edged out fellow countryman Prabath Jayasuriya and Australian powerhouse Travis Head to claim the title, adding this accolade to the one he secured in March earlier this year.
Mendis’ September performances were nothing short of spectacular. Across four Test matches, he amassed an impressive 451 runs at an astounding average of 90.20. His standout contributions were instrumental in Sri Lanka’s memorable series triumph against New Zealand on home soil and a consolation victory at The Oval in England.
The 25-year-old left-hander expressed his delight at receiving the award for the second time in 2024:
“I am honoured to be once again chosen as the ICC Men’s Player of the Month, and this accolade brings me immense happiness and pride. All the hard work put into becoming the player I am today is starting to pay off, and being recognised on the global stage is truly rewarding,” Mendis said.
He further added, “This recognition gives me strength to continue working hard on the cricketing field and aspire for even greater achievements, thus helping my team win games and bring glory to our country.“
Mendis also made history in September, becoming the first men’s player to record fifty-plus scores in his first eight Test matches. Additionally, he became the fastest player in 75 years to reach 1000 Test runs—achieving this milestone in just eight Tests, equaling the legendary Don Bradman‘s record of reaching the landmark in 13 innings.
His best knock of the month came during the second Test against New Zealand, where he dominated with an unbeaten 182 as Sri Lanka piled up a massive first-innings score of 602/5 declared. Another remarkable moment was his gritty 114 in the first Test when Sri Lanka was in a difficult position at 88/3. His innings played a pivotal role in securing a 63-run victory for his team.
With two ICC Player of the Month awards under his belt in 2024, Kamindu Mendis is cementing his place as one of Sri Lanka’s brightest cricketing talents. His journey to even greater heights continues as he remains determined to achieve more success for himself and his country.
