A British backpacker has been tragically killed while on a dream trip to New Zealand.
Joseph Snode, 26, was a huge Lord of the Rings fan and worked at Buckingham University for four years to save money for his trip.
Naturally Hobbiton was one of the first stops on his grand tour but he was tragically killed days later in a one vehicle crash on Otira Highway in Jacksons, Westland on January 28.
His devastated mother Elaine said: “He was living his dream life before it was taken from him.”
Joseph was driving to Christchurch when the car he was in crash.
“He was given a lift that crashed, killing him instantly, the other occupants had minor injuries,” Elaine said.
“He visited Hobbiton and other Lord of the Rings sites and had a few days hiking on his own along the Abel Tasman Coast Track. We had no idea these magical days were to be his final days in New Zealand.”
A GoFundMe page has been set up for Joseph’s memorial service in the UK.
“It seems to be taking an age to hear that he is being repatriated to us. But he is being cared for by wonderful people in New Zealand who have kept us up to date with the process,” Elaine said.
