John Cena Retires from WWE After 23-Year Career

WWE icon John Cena bid farewell to the ring after more than two decades, losing his final match to Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13.

The bout was a dramatic back and forth contest filled with twists and near falls. Gunther ultimately sealed victory with a relentless Sleeper Hold, forcing Cena to tap out despite the crowd’s chants of “Don’t give up.”

Cena, who debuted in June 2002, leaves behind a legendary 23 year career. He became the face of WWE for nearly two decades, delivering countless memorable feuds, moments, and championship reigns.

At Money in the Bank 2024, Cena announced that 2025 would mark his final year of in ring competition, launching a farewell tour across the globe that culminated at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. A special tournament determined his last opponent, with Gunther earning the honor after defeating LA Knight.
