Renowned Sri Lankan mountaineer Johan Peiris, who successfully climbed the highest peaks on all seven continents, arrived at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) yesterday morning after conquering his final summit, Mount Denali in Alaska, North America.
Peiris landed in Colombo aboard Qatar Airways flight QR-658 from Doha, where he was warmly welcomed by his family, friends, colleagues, and representatives from his sponsors.
With this achievement, Peiris becomes one of the few Sri Lankans to complete the prestigious Seven Summits challenge – scaling the tallest mountain on each of the world’s seven continents. His mountaineering journey, which began in 2014 with the ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, reached its climax this year with the successful climb of Denali, the highest peak in North America.
Over the past 11 years, Peiris has proudly carried the Sri Lankan flag to the summits of Kilimanjaro (Africa), Everest (Asia), Elbrus (Europe), Aconcagua (South America), Vinson (Antarctica), Kosciuszko (Australia), and now Denali (North America).
Speaking to reporters at BIA, Peiris expressed gratitude for the support he received throughout his expeditions and shared plans to write a book documenting his experiences on the world’s most challenging peaks. He also revealed his intention to promote Sri Lanka as an adventure tourism destination for international mountaineers.
Aside from his mountaineering accomplishments, Johan Peiris is a professional hairstylist who operates salons in Colombo, several star-class hotels, London, and Australia.
Peiris’ remarkable feat has brought pride and recognition to Sri Lanka, placing the nation firmly on the global mountaineering map.
