There are two separate faults affecting the models, both of which could cause an increased risk of an accident, according to the recall notice.
Jeep Australia has recalled more than 13,000 examples of its Cherokee and Grand Cherokee SUVs, citing multiple potential faults that could lead to a fire or the front wheels “leaning outwards”.
The 10,160 affected Cherokees are stamped 2013 to 2015 models, but may have been sold later.
The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says: “Due to a manufacturing defect, the power liftgate module (PLGM) may fail due to an electrical short circuit. This may result in a vehicle fire with the ignition turned on or off.
“A vehicle fire could increase the risk of an accident, causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users, bystanders, and/or damage to property.”

The 2854 affected Grand Cherokees, including the Grand Cherokee L, are stamped 2021 to 2023 models, but may have also been sold later.
The second recall notice says: “The upper control arm retaining bolts may have been damaged during vehicle assembly. A loss of clamp load may result in your vehicle’s front wheel leaning outward which could lead to an accident and serious injury or death to the vehicle occupants and other road users.”

Grand Cherokee owners can contact their nearest authorised dealership as soon as possible to have the work carried out, free of charge, while for the Cherokee fault owners are advised to contact their dealer to make an appointment to have the PLGM inspected and replaced, also for free.
