Jaishankar Stands Firm Chabahar Port Deal Vital Amid US Warning

Amidst US warnings of potential sanctions over India’s Chabahar Port deal with Iran, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar defends the agreement, highlighting its regional significance and the broader benefits it offers.

In Kolkata, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of the Chabahar Port project, dismissing concerns raised by the United States regarding potential sanctions. The 10-year agreement between India and Iran for the operation of the Chabahar Port has sparked debates, with the US cautioning against business deals with Tehran. However, Jaishankar reiterated that the project serves the interests of the entire region and should not be viewed narrowly.

He pointed out that the US itself had previously acknowledged the broader relevance of the Chabahar Port. Jaishankar’s remarks come in the wake of the signing of a Long-Term Bilateral Contract between Indian Ports Global Limited (IPGL) and the Port & Maritime Organisation (PMO) of Iran for the operation of Shahid-Behesti port in the Chabahar Port Development Project.

India’s association with the Chabahar Port has been longstanding, with the recent agreement marking a significant milestone. Despite past challenges in signing a long-term pact, Jaishankar highlighted that New Delhi was able to overcome obstacles and finalize the agreement, which is crucial for improving port operations and facilitating regional trade.

The Chabahar Port holds strategic importance as a transit hub for trade with Afghanistan and Central Asian countries, providing them with access to sea routes. India’s involvement in the development and operation of the port underscores its commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and fostering economic growth in the region.
