South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad has undergone changes after injuries ruled out two players, with batsman Tony de Zorzi and all-rounder Donovan Ferreira replaced by Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs, both of whom had been unexpected omissions from the original squad.
De Zorzi, who made headlines as a surprise inclusion in the squad three weeks ago and has played two T20 internationals, suffered a hamstring injury during a one-day international in India last month. His recovery from the injury has not progressed as anticipated, keeping him out of the tournament. Ferreira, meanwhile, fractured his collarbone in an SA20 match last week, ruling him out of the squad.
Veteran batsman David Miller will miss South Africa’s three-match series against the West Indies next week due to a groin injury and must clear a fitness test before joining the team in India. Rubin Hermann will step in for Miller during the series starting Tuesday in Paarl. Coach Shukri Conrad expressed optimism over Miller’s recovery, citing positive results from a follow-up scan.
Rickelton, who finished as the top run-scorer in the league phase of the SA20, and Stubbs, previously considered one of South Africa’s leading T20 players, will now bring their experience to the revamped squad.
Revised South Africa T20 World Cup squad:
Aiden Markram (captain), Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Quinton de Kock (wkt), Marco Jansen, George Linde, Keshav Maharaj, Kwena Maphaka, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Jason Smith, Tristan Stubbs.
