Indian cinema lights up Melbourne and Perth at NIFFA

The National Indian Film Festival of Australia (NIFFA) is making waves in Melbourne and Perth, offering audiences an immersive experience of Indian storytelling. Running from 13 February to 2 March 2025, the festival has brought together a diverse selection of films, highlighting the vibrancy of Indian cinema.

In Melbourne, screenings at The Backlot Studios have featured an eclectic mix of films. The festival opened with Superboys of Malegaon, a feature film that captures the spirit of grassroots filmmaking. Documentary lovers have had the chance to engage with What If I Tell You…, while short films like Knot and The Man Who Hurls News have added depth to the lineup. Other standout films include WingMan (The Universal Irony of Love), an indie feature, and Baghjan, a documentary feature film. The final day in Melbourne will showcase Roam Rome Mein, wrapping up the festival with a strong narrative-driven experience.

Perth has also embraced NIFFA with screenings at The Backlot Studios and Murdoch University. Films like The Making of the Mahatma, Mammo, and Mujib: The Making of a Nation have drawn audiences eager to explore India’s historical and contemporary narratives. The Perth screenings have reflected a mix of feature films, documentaries, and short films, ensuring a well-rounded cinematic experience.

NIFFA’s expansion across Australia has been made possible with the support of the Indian High Commission and Consulates in Sydney, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth.  Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of volunteers and organisers has worked tirelessly to bring NIFFA to life. Their passion for film and cultural exchange has created an event that goes beyond the screen, offering opportunities for discussion and engagement.

With encore screenings and more films lined up, NIFFA’s presence in Melbourne and Perth has set the stage for a long-lasting cinematic connection between India and Australia.
