Federal parliament has heard bombshell evidence of a major secret drug scandal in the AFL, and the Prime Minister has been urged to act.
During a parliamentary session on Tuesday night, a federal MP, Andrew Wilkie, utilized parliamentary privilege to assert that the AFL has been concealing a significant drug issue among its players. Wilkie claimed to possess a signed statement from a former team doctor of the Melbourne Football Club, alleging that the club instructed players to feign injuries if they tested positive for drugs to evade detection and potential penalties from official integrity bodies.
He further contended that the AFL prioritized players’ participation “at all costs,” suggesting that if players had no illegal substances in their system, they were allowed to play, but if drugs were detected, players were often advised to fabricate an injury. Wilkie asserted that the results of these undisclosed tests were withheld from Sports Integrity Australia or WADA.
Additionally, Wilkie asserted having additional evidence indicating a widespread cover-up of a cocaine issue within the AFL. He called for urgent intervention at the highest levels, urging the Prime Minister to personally address the matter. Wilkie emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the term “white-line fever” now carried a different and more sinister connotation within the AFL.
