Australian Olympic legend Ian Thorpe has reported an alleged theft involving $150,000, in what is believed to be an insurance-related incident.
According to 2GB Radio host Ben Fordham, the five-time Olympic gold medalist visited Paddington Police Station and spoke with officers at length on Thursday afternoon.
In a statement, NSW Police confirmed that a 42-year-old man attended the station to report the theft and that an investigation has now been launched by the Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command. Authorities have yet to release further details.
Thorpe’s manager said the former swimmer was discussing an “insurance job” with police but stopped short of confirming whether Thorpe had been scammed or offering additional information.
Thorpe, who retired in 2006 at the age of just 24, remains one of Australia’s most decorated athletes, with a total of nine Olympic medals and global recognition for his achievements in the pool.
