It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Kumara Welgama, former Kalutara district MP and Minister, at the age of 74. Known for his dedication and leadership, Welgama played a pivotal role in shaping Sri Lanka’s political landscape for over four decades.
Welgama began his political career in 1984 as the Chief Organiser for the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) in the Agalawatte electorate, serving until 2000.
His commitment to public service saw him rise through the ranks, taking on key ministerial roles.
As the Minister of Industrial Development (2007-2010) and later as Minister of Transport (2010-2015), his vision contributed to the country’s progress during SLFP-led governments.
In 2020, he founded the New Lanka Freedom Party, advocating for change and contesting elections in alliance with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).
Welgama’s leadership was marked by his passion for the people, his vision for development, and his commitment to Sri Lanka.
Kumara Welgama’s legacy will live on through the lives he touched and the progress he inspired.
