On March 27th, 2024, the cricketing world lost a guiding light, Russel Hamer, my mentor, and first cricket coach. Born on June 12th, 1947, Russel’s passion for cricket defined his life, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
As I sit down to pay tribute to Russel, memories came to my mind of the hours spent on the cricket field under his guidance. His dedication, enthusiasm, and love for the game were infectious, shaping not just skilled cricketers, but also molding us into better individuals.
Russel was more than a coach; he was a mentor who believed in nurturing both our cricketing skills and our character. His teachings extended far beyond the boundaries of the field, imparting invaluable life lessons that stayed with us long after we left the pitch.
As I recall my days under Russel’s guidance with deep gratitude and fondness. Russel was not just my under 13 cricket coach at SSC; he was the embodiment of cricketing wisdom and kindness. Every Sunday morning, I eagerly joined practice alongside Russel’s son Peter and other aspiring young cricketers.
I owe Russel a debt of gratitude for teaching me the intricacies of cricket. While I may not have been the most skilled player, Russel’s insights into the game were invaluable. His coaching went beyond technique; it instilled in me a love and respect for the sport that continues to shape my life.
Russel’s impact transcended cricket; he shaped me into the person I am today. I’ll never forget his advice, his encouragement, and his unwavering belief in my potential. To him, I owe not just my cricketing skills, but also the resilience and determination that have guided me through life’s challenges.
In the following tribute, I invite you to join me in celebrating the life and legacy of Russel Hamer. Through anecdotes, memories, and reflections, we’ll honor a man whose passion for cricket knew no bounds and whose impact will continue to resonate for years to come. Though Russel may have left us, his spirit lives on in every wicket taken, every run scored, and every heart he touched.
May you rest in peace, knowing that you’ve left an indelible mark on us all.
