Hearing of Case Against Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe Proceeds Without His Presence

The case filed against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, arrested and remanded over the alleged misuse of state funds, was taken up at the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today, according to Ada Derana reporters.

However, Wickremesinghe was not produced in court for the hearing. Prison Media Spokesperson Jagath Weerasinghe stated earlier that medical recommendations required the former President to remain under close observation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

He further noted that if the Magistrate orders Wickremesinghe to appear virtually via Zoom, arrangements could be made accordingly.

Wickremesinghe was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on August 22 under the Public Property Act, linked to allegations of misusing state funds. Following his arrest, court ordered him to be remanded until today. Due to his health condition, he was admitted first to the Prison Hospital and later transferred to the Colombo National Hospital ICU on medical advice.

At present, the former President continues to receive treatment in the ICU while legal proceedings against him move forward.
