Health trade unions representing the sector have intensified calls for the removal of Dr. Rukshan Bellana from his position as Deputy Director of the National Hospital, Colombo, citing his alleged mistreatment of junior staffers during a recent strike.
Amid escalating tensions, Ravi Kumudesh, president of the Federation of Health Professionals, voiced concerns over Dr. Bellana’s conduct, accusing him of publicly criticizing and humiliating junior staffers involved in the recent strike. The unions argue that such behavior is unacceptable and undermines the morale of health workers.
The situation reached a boiling point on Friday, February 16, when protesting junior staff reportedly confined Dr. Bellana to his office at the National Hospital in Colombo. The unions vow to continue their protests until Dr. Bellana is removed from his position, emphasizing the need for appropriate leadership within the healthcare system.
