In a significant turn of events, Graham Arnold has officially stepped down as the Socceroos coach, effective immediately.
Football Australia confirmed the decision on Friday, following Arnold’s reflection on the team’s recent World Cup qualifying performances. The coach, who served as the longest-tenured leader in Socceroos history, leaves just before Australia’s next crucial qualifiers in October.
Arnold, appointed in 2018, led the Socceroos to their most successful FIFA World Cup campaign in 2022, reaching the Round of 16. However, a rocky start to the third round of World Cup qualifying — with only one point from two matches, including a home loss to Bahrain — has placed Australia fifth in their group. Arnold stated that he felt it was time for change, both for himself and the national team.
Football Australia is now urgently searching for a new coach to lead the Socceroos as they prepare for upcoming matches against China and Japan in October. CEO James Johnson thanked Arnold for his dedication and contributions, acknowledging the impact Arnold had on Australian football.
The search for a new head coach begins as Australia faces critical games that could define their World Cup hopes.
