In a historic milestone, Captain Gopichand Thotakura, a distinguished Indian pilot, has made history as the first Indian space tourist on a Blue Origin flight. The mission, which included a diverse crew of six, launched from Texas, marking Blue Origin’s return to space travel nearly two years after a previous uncrewed test flight failure.
On a significant Sunday morning, a Blue Origin spacecraft, founded by Jeff Bezos, soared towards the edge of space with six crew members on board. Among them was Captain Gopichand Thotakura, a veteran pilot from Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. The New Shepard rocket, part of the NS-25 mission, lifted off at 9:36 am local time from Blue Origin’s private facility in West Texas, as reported by CNN. The mission was streamed live on the Blue Origin website, beginning at 8:12 am local time.
The crew comprised Captain Thotakura, venture capitalist Mason Angel, Sylvain Chiron, founder of Brasserie Mont-Blanc, software engineer and entrepreneur Kenneth L. Hess, retired accountant Carol Schaller, and Ed Dwight, a retired US Air Force captain and America’s first Black astronaut candidate selected by President John F. Kennedy in 1961.
Post-launch, the rocket successfully separated from the crew capsule, which ascended beyond Earth’s atmosphere, reaching an altitude of 105.7 kilometers, according to Reuters. The capsule, shaped like a gumdrop, allowed the crew members to experience weightlessness and float freely for a few minutes before safely descending back to Earth under parachutes.
This mission marks Blue Origin’s first manned flight since the September 2022 incident where an uncrewed mission failed shortly after liftoff, leading to a temporary grounding of the New Shepard rocket. The previous mission’s capsule, filled with NASA experiments, had to eject safely mid-flight.
