Google to Cut Jobs in Hyderabad and Bengaluru Amid Global Restructuring Strategy

As part of its broader global streamlining efforts, Google is preparing for another round of layoffs, with its Indian workforce—particularly employees in Hyderabad and Bengaluru—facing the brunt. The move signals shifting priorities in the tech giant’s advertising, sales, and marketing arms.

Google is reportedly set to implement fresh layoffs in India, aligning with its ongoing global restructuring strategy aimed at operational efficiency. According to a report by Business Standard, the upcoming job cuts will predominantly affect employees working in advertising, sales, and marketing—especially those stationed at Google’s Hyderabad and Bengaluru offices.

Although the company has not officially confirmed the layoffs or disclosed how many roles will be affected, sources indicate that the dismissal process may begin as early as next week. The development follows a significant shake-up in Google’s Platforms and Devices division, which recently saw hundreds of roles eliminated worldwide. This division manages major product lines, including Android, the Chrome browser, and Pixel smartphones.

Despite the looming cuts, Google appears to be adopting a slightly more cautious approach for its Indian engineering teams. Instead of immediate layoffs, technical staff at the Hyderabad and Bengaluru campuses may be reassigned to revenue-generating projects to optimize performance and resource allocation.

The layoffs are part of a broader structural overhaul that began last year, when Google merged its Platforms and Devices teams. To ease the transition, the company introduced voluntary exit packages and buyout options for employees, starting in January. A company spokesperson earlier confirmed that these moves were necessary to streamline operations post-merger.

The restructuring comes amid a rapidly evolving digital economy shaped by advancements in generative AI and a growing focus on prioritizing high-impact business segments. Tech giants across the globe—including Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon—have all undertaken similar strategic shifts, marked by tighter performance evaluations and a focus on core engineering strength.

According to data from Layoffs.fyi, over 28,000 tech workers have lost their jobs globally in 2025 across 108 companies. Microsoft is reportedly planning additional layoffs in May, targeting middle management and boosting the engineer-to-manager ratio. Google’s India offices were similarly impacted in 2023, when the company laid off 12,000 employees worldwide—6% of its workforce.

The current round of layoffs, however, appears to be more targeted, aiming to align Google’s workforce with changing market dynamics and digital transformation priorities.
