Following India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’ — a military retaliation targeting Pakistan-based terror camps after the April 22 Pahalgam attack — tensions have significantly escalated along the India-Pakistan border. Despite the rising hostilities, global media coverage appears subdued.
On May 10, major international outlets like The New York Times, The Washington Post, TASS, Global Times, and The Guardian offered varying levels of attention to the developing conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbors.
U.S. Media Coverage:
The New York Times did not feature the India-Pakistan conflict on its front page but carried a report titled “India and Pakistan Escalate Attacks to Military Bases,” noting Pakistan’s claims of Indian airstrikes on three bases and subsequent retaliatory actions.
The Washington Post emphasized the gravity of the situation with a headline reading: “Pakistan strikes sites inside India, bringing nuclear rivals nearer to war.”
Russian and Chinese Media:
Russia’s TASS placed the news among its top four, citing GeoTV in reporting a series of Indian strikes on Pakistan’s air force infrastructure.
China’s Global Times and outlets like Xinhua and CGTN leaned heavily on Pakistani sources, stating that India had not officially responded.
UK Media:
In contrast, the UK’s Guardian offered more extensive coverage with headlines like “India-Pakistan military reprisals escalate: what we know so far.”
On-the-Ground Developments: Pakistan launched drone attacks on Indian territory for a second consecutive night, targeting 26 locations from Jammu and Kashmir to Gujarat. Indian defences intercepted many of these threats, but civilian areas were affected — notably in Ferozepur, where a family was injured after debris from a downed drone damaged their home.
The Indian Army released footage showing drones destroyed over Khasa Cantt in Amritsar. In a firm statement, it warned:
“Pakistan’s blatant attempt to violate India’s sovereignty and endanger civilians is unacceptable. The Indian Army will thwart enemy designs.”
India’s Ministry of Defence reported further drone incursions on May 10, including attacks on the Shambhu Temple and residential zones, affirming its commitment to defending national sovereignty.
