Mining magnate Gina Rinehart has expressed disappointment over the Liberal Party’s recent federal election defeat, calling on the party to embrace policies inspired by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
In a statement posted on her personal website, Rinehart attributed the Coalition’s loss to media influence and the party’s hesitation to adopt bold, pro-business reforms. “The left media did a very successful effort, frightening many in the Liberal Party from anything Trump and away from any Trump-like policies,” she wrote.
Rinehart, Australia’s richest person with an estimated net worth of $46.5 billion, argued that policies aimed at cutting bureaucracy, reducing government waste, and lowering taxes were largely absent from the Liberal platform this year.
She referred to the Liberal Party as the “me too” party and stressed the need for a more assertive, reform-driven approach moving forward. Her remarks come amid broader internal debate about the future direction of the Liberal Party, with some figures urging a return to centrist values.
Rinehart, a long-time supporter of the Coalition and a known Trump ally, has previously provided travel assistance to former opposition leader Peter Dutton and attended Trump’s election party at Mar-a-Lago.
Despite her push for a more conservative shift, other Coalition members have warned against adopting Trumpist rhetoric, citing voter backlash and economic instability linked to such policies.
While acknowledging the defeat, Rinehart wished Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his government well, urging Australians to support the nation’s leadership with “carefully considered policies.”
