A delegation of German investors has arrived in Sri Lanka to explore the establishment of a state-of-the-art technical college, modelled on the German Technical College currently operating in the country.
The six-member delegation arrived at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Katunayake, on Qatar Airways flight QR-660 from Doha at around 10.00 a.m. The group was welcomed by Jayadeva Sudusinghe, a Sri Lankan academic attached to the tourism sector in Germany.
The visit follows initial discussions held during the Sri Lankan President’s recent official visit to Germany, where the proposed investment was first discussed. The arrival of the German investors marks a continuation of those talks and reflects growing bilateral cooperation in education and skills development.
The delegation is led by Professor Thomas Holdner and is scheduled to remain in Sri Lanka for 14 days, during which they will hold meetings with relevant authorities and conduct feasibility studies for the proposed technical college.
Nursing Training and Employment Opportunities in Germany
In addition to the technical education project, the investors are also exploring a programme aimed at recruiting and training Sri Lankan women as nurses for employment in Germany. With nearly 65 per cent of Germany’s population being elderly, the demand for qualified caregivers continues to rise.
Under the proposed scheme, selected Sri Lankan nurses could earn a monthly salary of approximately 2,000 euros, equivalent to around Rs. 700,000, offering significant overseas employment opportunities.
If implemented, both initiatives are expected to strengthen Sri Lanka’s vocational education sector while creating valuable pathways for skilled employment abroad.
