George Bailey Laughs Off David Warner’s SOS and Puts Josh Inglis in Test Mix

George Bailey, Australia’s National Selection Chief, recently addressed speculation about Australia’s Test squad lineup, laughing off David Warner’s offer to come out of retirement. Warner’s suggestion that he’s “only a phone call away” from returning to the team seemed like a light-hearted jest, according to Bailey, who clarified, “I was firmly in the camp of assuming he was making those comments in jest.” The remarks come amid discussions about filling Test opening roles for the upcoming summer series.

Despite David Warner’s playful SOS, Bailey ruled out the possibility of Josh Inglis stepping in as a Test opener, though Inglis is “firmly in the conversation” as a batting option. Inglis has shown impressive form in domestic cricket, hitting consecutive centuries for Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield. Bailey praised Inglis’s recent performances, emphasizing his ability to switch from international to domestic formats seamlessly. “If the right opportunity opened up over the summer,” Bailey noted, “then I think he’d firmly be in that conversation.”

One of the lead contenders for the opening role is Cameron Bancroft, who showcased exceptional consistency last season with 778 Sheffield Shield runs. However, a slow start this year, with just 10 runs from four innings, has put his place in jeopardy. Bailey defended Bancroft, calling attention to his enduring consistency and reiterating that a couple of missed innings would not undermine his candidacy. “Missing out in a couple of Shield games isn’t going to be the be all and end all,” Bailey said, commending Bancroft’s work ethic and resilience.

Bancroft, alongside NSW’s emerging talent Sam Konstas and seasoned batter Marcus Harris, is contending for the opening slot to partner Usman Khawaja. The selectors will be closely watching upcoming Sheffield Shield matches and the Australia A vs. India A games, where players have the chance to make their case for the baggy green.
