The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has ordered the remand of the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Crimes Division at the Gampaha Police Station until January 6, in connection with an alleged bribery case.
The suspect was arrested yesterday by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption and produced before court today (26). CIABOC informed court that the officer is accused of soliciting and accepting a bribe amounting to Rs. 300,000.
Investigations were launched following a complaint by a businessman from the Dandugama area in Ja-Ela. The prosecution stated that the officer allegedly demanded money to avoid taking legal action against the complainant, who is said to have purchased stolen gold jewelry. The demand reportedly included Rs. 300,000 and three-quarters of a sovereign of gold.
CIABOC officials arrested the officer while he was allegedly accepting an initial payment of Rs. 250,000. During proceedings, investigators told court that inquiries are still ongoing, according to an Ada Derana reporter.
The defense requested consideration of the suspect’s family circumstances, noting his children are due to sit upcoming national examinations, but stated that a formal bail application would be filed later.
After reviewing submissions, Colombo Additional Magistrate Lahiru Warusavithana ordered the suspect to be remanded until January 6.
