From a Mobile Food Trailer to a Beloved Local Gem: Discover the Unique Burgher Flavors and Community Spirit of Ceylon Girl’s Café

Ceylon Girl’s Cafe is delighted to announce its latest milestones and upcoming ventures, continuing to share the rich and nostalgic flavours of Burgher cuisine with the local community. Founded by Angela Lord, the cafe is a testament to her heritage and passion for food, embodying the spirit of Ceylon and the legacy of Burgher culture.

Background and Inspiration

The name “Ceylon Girl’s Cafe” is deeply personal and historically significant. Angela Lord named it after Ceylon, which changed to Sri Lanka the year she was born. Identifying as a Ceylon girl rather than a Sri Lankan girl, she proudly represents the Burgher community through her culinary creations. Starting as a small takeaway in Sri Lanka just before the Tsunami, her journey brought her to Melbourne, where she launched a mobile food trailer in 2018, attending major events and catering house parties. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the business thrived by operating from her driveway, leading to booming deliveries and pick-up meals. This growth culminated in the opening of their current location, featuring an open kitchen design.

Unique Offerings

Ceylon Girl’s Cafe stands out as the only provider of Sri Lankan cuisine in the area, specializing in Burgher cooking. The dishes evoke a sense of nostalgia, reminding many customers of their grandmother’s cooking or taking them back home in their minds. Popular menu items include “Pan Rolls, Curry Puffs, Godumba Roties, Kottu, Biryani, Hoppers, Lamprais ” and unique cocktails made with Sri Lankan Arrack, Gin, and Vodka.

Community Support

The unwavering support from the local community has been instrumental in the cafe’s success. Their enthusiasm for something different has been a driving force, ensuring the cafe’s continued growth and popularity.

Special Events and Themed Nights

Ceylon Girl’s Cafe hosts a weekly buffet night on Wednesdays and a fortnightly buffet on Saturdays, with live music once a month on a Saturday. Buffets are priced at $30 per adult and $15 per child aged 5-11. To maintain a comfortable dining experience, the cafe uses time slots to avoid overcrowding.

Significant Achievements

In 2020, their food truck earned 5th place in the AGE Newspaper’s “Best Food Trucks in Melbourne” competition. The cafe’s adaptability is evident, with record-breaking turnover some weeks and quieter times in others. They cater to large functions and events, creating a vibrant street food atmosphere with live cooking, serving up to 450 people for various occasions, including weddings and birthdays.

Upcoming Projects

Looking ahead, Ceylon Girl’s Cafe plans to expand next year by leasing the adjacent space to create more dining and function areas, enhancing the overall customer experience.

New Ventures

The cafe is excited to announce the opening of a new bottle shop in “Ormond”, named Speak Easy Fine Liquor. Run by Angela Lord’s husband, Craig Evans, it offers a fine selection of local and Sri Lankan alcohol. Their grand opening will be celebrated soon.
