Former US ambassador Joe Hockey has slammed lengthy queues at one of the country’s busiest airports which he claims are “worse than the worst in the US” – despite no issues with queues or delays being flagged by airport staff.
The former federal treasurer and ambassador, who now leads international consultancy firm Bondi Partners, took to X (formerly Twitter) to complain of what he said was “complete confusion and overcrowding” at Sydney Airport on Tuesday.
His photo captured lengthy queues at one of the airport’s gates, with passengers lining up to catch a bus for one of the planes on the tarmac.
“Worse than the worst in the US today. Bring on Badgery’s which we started and funded in 2014,” Mr Hockey wrote in his post to his 170.4k followers.
Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Mr Hockey said his experience had been an “absolute mess”, as his flight was not only late but numerous other people were being ushered into lines.
But there were no issues raised that day about delays or queuing problems at the airport that day.
NCA NewsWire understands 100 per cent of domestic passengers and 99.3 per cent of international passengers have passed through security at Sydney Airport in under 10 minutes since December 1.
Sydney Airport was contacted for further comment.
Mr Hockey’s quip about “Badgery’s” is in reference to the $5.3b Western Sydney International Airport currently being built at Badgerys Creek, west of Sydney.
Construction is set to finish in 2026.
Up to 15m passengers are predicted to travel through the gateway of the 24-hour, seven-day-a-week airport by 2033.
Modelled flight paths for the airport have since revealed homes in Greendale, Luddenjam and Twin Creeks will bear the brunt of noise from planes landing and taking off, upon completion.
Late last year, NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey said cuts in federal infrastructure funding could jeopardise a planned Aerotropolis precinct surrounding the airport.
