Former Minister and leader of the Eelam People’s Democratic Party, Douglas Devananda, has been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department.
CID officers took him into custody today in connection with an investigation into how his personal firearm allegedly ended up in the possession of an organised criminal gang.
According to reports, the firearm—issued to Devananda by the Sri Lanka Army for his personal protection in 2001—was recovered in 2019 during investigations linked to notorious underworld figure Makandure Madush.
Investigators confirmed that checks on the serial number established the weapon had been officially issued to Devananda. During questioning, he reportedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation as to how the firearm went missing, leading to his arrest.
