Foreign Degrees, Fewer Jobs: Harvard Alum Warns Indian Students

Indian entrepreneur Rajesh Sawhney, a Harvard Business School graduate and prominent startup mentor, has issued a strong warning to Indian students—particularly those from prestigious institutions like the IITs—about the declining job prospects in popular study-abroad destinations like the US, UK, and Canada.

In a now-viral post on X (formerly Twitter), Sawhney stated, “There are no jobs in USA, Canada and UK for International students. Honeymoon is over, parents should think twice before spending crores on the expensive education.”

For years, a master’s degree abroad was seen as a surefire path to a high-paying tech job, especially for engineering graduates. But Sawhney emphasized that the once-reliable “$200K shortcut” no longer exists. “That hack works no more,” he said.

Sawhney, who leads GSF Accelerator—a leading startup mentorship and funding platform—highlighted how the job market has drastically shifted due to tightened visa policies and economic uncertainties.

Supporting his view, others online shared their own experiences. Some pointed out that even employees at top firms like Google are now facing job insecurity. Others claimed to earn similar salaries from India through online certifications and remote work.

The UK’s recent decision to reduce its post-study work visa from 2 years to 18 months, along with tougher US and Canadian immigration rules, has further complicated matters for international graduates.

Former students like Janhavi Jain, who completed her master’s in the UK, echoed this concern, revealing that most of her classmates returned to India due to lack of opportunities.

The message is clear: Academic prestige alone isn’t enough anymore. Today, success depends on building skills, adaptability, and a strong professional network.
