Airlines have hiked ticket prices to Colombo from major cities in India, Pakistan, and the Middle East following the Pakistani government’s approval for their national team to face India in the T20 World Cup.
Flights from India have seen fares triple compared to usual rates. In Mumbai, one of the busiest international travel hubs, direct Economy return tickets are now significantly above normal levels. Even from southern cities like Chennai, where the journey takes just over an hour, demand has driven prices sharply upward.
The surge reflects the intense excitement surrounding the Pakistan-India fixture, one of the most eagerly awaited matches in international cricket. Initially, Pakistan had decided not to play following Bangladesh’s withdrawal from matches in India over security concerns. After talks involving the ICC, Pakistan and Bangladesh cricket boards, as well as consultations with leaders from Sri Lanka and the UAE, Pakistan reversed its decision to boycott the game.
The government confirmed that the team will take the field on February 15 “to protect the spirit of cricket.” The ICC also clarified that Bangladesh would face no penalties for its absence, affirming the country’s ongoing importance in global cricket.
