Final phase of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls takes place today

The final leg of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections is underway, with voters across the region casting their ballots to elect representatives for 40 out of 90 constituencies. The voting exercise is significant, as it marks the first election since the erstwhile state became a Union Territory. The outcome is expected to have a lasting impact on the political landscape of the region, with the fate of statehood restoration hanging in the balance.

The 40 constituencies going to the polls today are spread across the Jammu division, which accounts for 24 seats, and the Kashmir Valley, with 16 seats up for grabs. Key districts like Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Udhampur, Baramulla, and Kupwara are among those participating in this phase. Voters in these areas are eager to exercise their franchise and have a say in shaping the future of the Union Territory.

While voter turnout in the first two phases of the election was lower than in 2014, there are hopes that the final phase will witness a higher turnout. This is partly due to the fact that statehood restoration has emerged as a key issue in the campaign, with various parties vying for the support of voters.

The contest involves some of the major political parties in the region, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and a National Conference-Congress alliance. The BJP, which has been in power at the Centre, has been campaigning aggressively in the region, promising to address the concerns of the people.

The PDP, which was a key player in the region’s politics until the abrogation of Article 370, is making a comeback of sorts, with its leader Mehbooba Mufti seeking to capitalize on her party’s popularity in the Valley. The National Conference-Congress alliance, meanwhile, is banking on its strong legacy in the region to win over voters.

As the results of the election begin to trickle in, it remains to be seen whether the promises made by the various parties will translate into reality. One thing is certain, however – the outcome of the election will have far-reaching implications for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, and will shape the future of the region in the years to come.
