Fatal Campus Shooting at South Carolina State University Leaves Two Dead, One Injured

A shooting at a dormitory at South Carolina State University left two people dead and another injured on Thursday night, prompting a campus-wide lockdown, officials confirmed.

The incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. local time at the Hugine Suites student residence, according to a statement posted on the university’s official Facebook page. Details about the shooter’s status or the identities of the victims have not been released.

“University officials have not yet confirmed the victims’ identities or the condition of the wounded individual,” the statement noted.

South Carolina State, a historically Black college with over 3,000 students, is located in Orangeburg, South Carolina, approximately 40 miles southeast of Columbia. The town also hosts Claflin University, another historically Black institution.

Campus authorities reported that the State Law Enforcement Division has been called in to investigate. As a precaution, Friday classes were canceled, and university security continues to monitor the situation.
