Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa confirmed that special police security had been deployed in the area. This measure was taken after an anonymous phone call advised against holding the final rites for Club Wasantha.
Surendra Wasantha Perera was fatally shot alongside Nayana Vasula Wijesuriya, who also lost his life in the incident. The attack injured four others, including Club Wasantha’s wife and popular local singer, K. Sujeewa.
During the emotional ceremony, Club Wasantha’s beloved mother delivered a heartfelt speech in memory of her son. His eldest son also promised to look after the family as his father did when he was alive. Friends and close relations gathered to bid farewell, sharing their grief and memories.
Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe raised concerns in Parliament about media leaks of internal crime information, stating that such actions could hinder justice. He urged the media to avoid publishing sensitive information that might jeopardize ongoing investigations. Additionally, Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon reissued a circular instructing officers not to release photos and personal information of suspects to the media, emphasizing the principle of innocence until proven guilty.
