A man has been charged with murder after the body of a woman, believed to be his mother, was discovered in the boot of a car in the sleepy northern NSW holiday town of Evans Head.

The shocking discovery was made on Friday morning when police were called out for a welfare check at a Park St unit.

Officers found the body of the 60-year-old woman in the boot of a car, which was on Friday afternoon being scoured by police forensic experts.

The woman’s son, a 39-year-old man, was arrested at the scene and taken to Ballina Police Station.

The man was charged with murder (DV) and improperly interfering with a corpse or human remains on Friday afternoon.

He was refused bail and will appear at Lismore Local Court on Saturday.

Police established a crime scene, cordoning off the unit block, and launched an investigation into the incident.

One woman, who was staying in a caravan park adjoining the unit block where the body was discovered, told reporters on Friday she did not hear anything but was shocked.

“Nobody likes to hear something like that happen so close to you, but I heard they took someone away this morning, so that’s made me feel better,” the woman said.

It prompted an outpouring of disbelief from locals online.

“Horrifying, and made even more poignant given this is International Women’s Day,” one person posted on Facebook.
