Dust Storm Causes Chaos at Delhi Airport: Over 50 Flights Delayed, Passengers Left Stranded

A massive dust storm that swept across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Friday evening severely disrupted flight operations at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, leading to widespread delays, diversions, and cancellations.

According to airport authorities, more than 50 domestic flights were delayed between Friday evening and Saturday morning. In addition, around 25 flights were diverted to alternate airports, while at least seven were cancelled due to poor visibility and safety concerns caused by the storm.

The disruption left hundreds of passengers stranded at Terminal 3 (T3), with many taking to social media to express frustration over the lack of communication from airline staff. Several travelers alleged that they were “held hostage” by airlines, citing inadequate updates, repeated rescheduling, and a lack of assistance during the ordeal.

Eyewitness accounts described chaotic scenes at the terminal, likening the situation to a “stampede,” as distressed passengers sought answers and support. The incident has sparked renewed concerns about emergency preparedness and passenger handling protocols during weather-related disruptions.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement addressing the grievances raised by passengers, though airlines are expected to review their response mechanisms following the backlash.
