In a celebration of the rich heritage and natural beauty of Sri Lanka’s railway system, the nation unveiled its latest gem, the ‘Dunhinda Odyssey’ luxury tourist train. The inauguration of this lavish journey took place on the morning of the 5th, marking the centenary of train services along the Colombo – Badulla line.
Under the distinguished patronage of Minister of Transport and Highways, Bandula Gunawardena, the maiden voyage of the ‘Dunhinda Odyssey’ commenced from the historic Colombo Fort railway station at 6:30 a.m.
This illustrious addition to Sri Lanka Railways represents the third installment of the revered ‘Odyssey’ train series, designed specifically to cater to the discerning tastes of tourists. Following in the footsteps of its predecessors, the ‘Ella Odyssey’ and ‘Seethawaka Odyssey’, the ‘Dunhinda Odyssey’ promises an unforgettable journey through some of the island’s most breathtaking landscapes.
Dedicated to passenger transportation after its grand inauguration, the ‘Dunhinda Odyssey’ offers a range of ticket options, with first-class tickets priced at Rs. 8,000, second-class at Rs. 6,000, and third-class at Rs. 5,000 for the journey between Colombo Fort and Badulla/Ella.
Operating every Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday from Colombo Fort to Badulla at 6:30 a.m., and from Badulla to Colombo Fort every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 8:00 a.m., the ‘Dunhinda Odyssey’ presents travelers with a schedule designed for convenience and exploration.
One of the unique features of this luxury tourist train is its planned stops at various tourist attractions and scenic viewpoints along the route. Passengers will have the opportunity to marvel at the awe-inspiring Horsetail Falls, pay homage to the sacred Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada), and witness the majestic cascades of St. Clair’s Falls and Elgin Falls. The journey also includes highlights such as the Summit Level, Tunnel No. 18 (Pattipola Tunnel), Idalgashinna Wind Gap, Kithal Ella Falls, Nine Arch Bridge, and Demodara Loop, ensuring an enriching experience for all on board.
Comprising four first-class cabins, three second-class cabins, and one third-class cabin equipped with a canteen, the ‘Dunhinda Odyssey’ prioritizes comfort and luxury, promising travelers a journey that transcends mere transportation.
