Dubai police have successfully foiled an elaborate attempt to steal and smuggle a rare pink diamond valued at $25 million, authorities announced on August 18.
According to the Government of Dubai Media Office, three suspects posing as wealthy investors tricked a jeweler into showing them the 21-carat diamond outside of his secure shop. The gang reportedly spent over a year preparing the heist—renting luxury cars, holding meetings in high-end hotels, and even hiring a diamond expert to appear credible.
The thieves allegedly lured the jeweler to a villa, where they managed to steal the gem. Their plan was to smuggle the diamond out of the country inside a small refrigerator bound for Asia.
However, Dubai Police swiftly intervened, arresting the suspects within just eight hours of the theft and recovering the stone.
Authorities highlighted the extraordinary rarity of the diamond, noting that its purity, clarity, and symmetry make it nearly impossible to find another like it—there is just a 0.01% chance of discovering a similar stone worldwide.
The jeweler had imported the diamond from Europe for sale in Dubai, a global hub for luxury shopping and trade in precious stones.
Officials praised the swift operation as a testament to Dubai’s security systems and vigilance in protecting its reputation as a safe haven for international trade.
