Dr. Saman Weerasinghe honoured with Russia’s Prestigious Order of Friendship

Dr. Saman Weerasinghe has been awarded the Order of Friendship (Orden Druzhby) by Russian President Vladimir Putin at a ceremony held at the Kremlin in Moscow.

The award, one of Russia’s highest civilian honours, recognises Dr. Weerasinghe’s long-standing efforts to strengthen diplomatic, cultural, and economic ties between Sri Lanka and Russia.

Notably, Dr. Weerasinghe is the only Asian recipient of the award in 2025, marking a significant achievement for Sri Lanka’s diplomatic engagement on the global stage.

A graduate of the Moscow Medical Academy with Honours, Dr. Weerasinghe served as Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Russia from 2015 to 2018. He currently serves as the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka–Russia Friendship Society and Chairman of the Centre of the Russian Geographical Society in Colombo.

Through his leadership, Dr. Weerasinghe has played a key role in promoting cultural exchange, scientific cooperation, and goodwill between the two nations.
