Donald Trump ‘Very Seriously’ Considering a US Version of Australia’s Superannuation System

US President Donald Trump has revealed that his administration is “very seriously” exploring the possibility of adopting a retirement savings model similar to Australia’s superannuation system.

Trump made the remarks at the White House during the announcement of a $US6.25 billion ($9.5 billion AUD) philanthropic contribution to the government’s new “Trump Accounts” program for American children. Referring to Australia’s $4.1 trillion superannuation pool, he highlighted its reputation for stability and consistent growth.

“There’s a certain Australian plan that people are liking and talking about … it’s for working people,” Trump said. “We’re looking at it very seriously. It has worked out very well.”

How such a system would coexist with the United States’ long-standing 401(k) retirement model, which relies largely on voluntary contributions, remains unclear. Still, this is not the first time Australian superannuation has sparked interest in Washington. Earlier this year, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed admiration for its reliable performance.

Trump’s comments were delivered alongside tech billionaires Michael and Susan Dell, who announced a major donation to support the Trump Accounts initiative. Michael Dell said the contribution would provide $US250 to every eligible child under the age of 11.

Under the Trump Accounts scheme, the US Treasury will deposit $US1000 into investment accounts for all American children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028. The Dells’ donation will extend an additional $250 to younger children already enrolled.

The accounts—available to any American under 18 with a Social Security number—must be invested in index funds tracking the overall stock market. At age 18, beneficiaries may withdraw the money for education, home ownership, or business startup costs.

As interest in Australia’s compulsory retirement model grows in Washington, Trump’s remarks suggest that a significant shift in US retirement policy could be under consideration.
