Digital Nomad Visa Programme Goes Live in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka officially inaugurated its Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) program yesterday (26) at the “Silk Route” terminal of Bandaranaike International Airport, marking a key step in the country’s push toward digital economy growth. The ceremony was led by Eranga Weeraratne, highlighting the government’s commitment to attracting global remote professionals.

The Digital Nomad Visa is tailored for foreign nationals aged 18 and above who wish to live in Sri Lanka while working remotely for businesses or employers based abroad. Applicants must show a minimum monthly foreign income of USD 2,000 to qualify.

Visa holders are allowed to reside in the country but are not permitted to take up local employment or engage in domestic business ventures. However, they may enroll their children in international or private schools.

The one-year visa is granted following a thorough evaluation, including submission of police clearance certificates and medical reports from the applicant’s home country. Applications are reviewed by officials from the Ministry of Defence and the Department of Immigration and Emigration. Once approved, visa holders’ financial activity and tax compliance are monitored by the Department of Inland Revenue, Ministry of Tourism, and Department of Immigration and Emigration.

The first recipients of the program are Ukrainian nationals Daria Gordiienko and Yaroslav Kovelchuk. The launch event was attended by senior officials, including Presidential Adviser on Digital Economy Hans Wijayasuriya and Nayana Senaratne, Controller (Visa) of the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

For more information or to apply, interested candidates can visit the official website of the Department of Immigration and Emigration at www.immigration.gov.lk.
