Dense fog conditions caused widespread disruption to flight and rail services across several parts of North India on Sunday morning, severely affecting visibility and delaying normal travel.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Delhi and neighbouring regions, warning of dense fog and cold wave–like conditions during the early hours of the day. Reduced visibility led to precautionary measures across transport networks, resulting in delays and diversions.
Rail services were among the worst affected, with over four dozen trains running behind schedule. Several long-distance services experienced significant delays as train speeds were reduced for safety reasons. The Prayagraj Express was delayed by nearly five hours, while the Rewa–Anand Vihar Express reached its destination around nine hours late. The New Delhi Tejas Rajdhani Express was delayed by approximately four hours. Other major services, including the Mahabodhi Express, Sampurna Kranti Express, and Brahmaputra Mail, also reported delays ranging from 45 minutes to several hours.
Air travel was similarly impacted, particularly in Delhi and other northern cities. Several flights were delayed, and airlines cautioned passengers about possible cancellations due to persistent fog.
SpiceJet issued a travel advisory, stating that poor visibility in cities such as Delhi, Amritsar, Jammu, Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Patna, Guwahati and Bagdogra could affect flight operations. Air India also warned that dense fog across parts of northern India, including Chandigarh and Amritsar, may disrupt scheduled flights. IndiGo advised passengers that fog-related conditions at Hindon Airport and other locations could result in slower aircraft movement and short delays.
Delhi Airport authorities confirmed that multiple flights were operating behind schedule and urged passengers to stay updated on real-time flight information.
Travellers were advised to check flight and train status before departing for airports or railway stations, as weather conditions were expected to remain challenging during the morning hours.
