Deadly Lightning and Storms Claim Nearly 50 Lives in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh

Lightning strikes, hailstorms, and heavy rainfall wreaked havoc in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, killing at least 47 people and prompting urgent responses from state authorities.

In a tragic turn of events, at least 47 lives were lost on Thursday across Bihar and Uttar Pradesh due to severe lightning strikes and rain-related incidents, as reported by news agency PTI.

Bihar bore the brunt of the disaster, with 25 fatalities reported across several districts due to lightning and hailstorms. According to an official statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, Nalanda district was the worst affected with 18 deaths, followed by Siwan (2), and one each in Katihar, Darbhanga, Begusarai, Bhagalpur, and Jehanabad.

This comes a day after 13 individuals were killed in lightning incidents across four districts in the state. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed deep sorrow over the loss and announced an ex gratia payment of ₹4 lakh to the families of the deceased.

However, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav suggested that the death toll was even higher. In a post on X, he claimed that over 50 people had died across the state due to storms, rain, and related mishaps such as tree and wall collapses. He extended condolences to the affected families and urged support in this time of grief.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange alert’ for several districts in Bihar, including Darbhanga, East Champaran, West Champaran, Gaya, Sitamarhi, Kishanganj, and Patna, forecasting heavy rain through Friday and Saturday.

Neighbouring Uttar Pradesh also witnessed severe weather conditions, with at least 22 deaths reported from 15 districts following intense rainfall, hailstorms, and lightning. Fatehpur and Azamgarh each reported three deaths, while Firozabad, Kanpur Dehat, and Sitapur recorded two fatalities each. One death was reported from several other districts, including Gonda, Ghazipur, Amethi, and Unnao.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to promptly release ₹4 lakh in financial relief to the bereaved families. He also ordered that proper medical treatment be provided to the injured and necessary aid be extended to all those affected. Furthermore, the Chief Minister instructed district authorities to conduct a survey to assess crop damage and submit reports for further action.
