The Dalai Lama has made history as a Grammy winner, taking home the award for Best Audiobook, Narration and Storytelling at the 68th Grammy Awards pre-ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 1. The 90-year-old spiritual leader earned the honor for Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness The Dalai Lama, joining fellow first-time winner Steven Spielberg in the spotlight.
Musician Rufus Wainwright accepted the award on the Dalai Lama’s behalf, joking, “OK, I am not the Dalai Lama, obviously,” while praising the wisdom at the heart of the project. The album, featuring contributions from artists such as Maggie Rogers and Andra Day, blends Hindustani classical influences and reflections on mindfulness, harmony, and health.
In the competitive category, the Dalai Lama outshone rivals including Grammy host Trevor Noah, Fab Morvan of Milli Vanilli, and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, marking a unique and historic achievement in his decades-long career.
