Czech President Petr Pavel has been hospitalized following an accident while riding a motorcycle, his office announced. The injuries sustained are described as “not serious,” but a brief hospital stay for observation was deemed necessary. No additional details regarding his condition have been provided.
The incident occurred on a closed racing circuit, prompting Czech police to confirm that they would not be investigating the matter, as it did not take place on a public road. President Pavel, 62, is an avid motorbike enthusiast and is believed to have been riding a BMW R1200 GS at the time of the accident.
This is not the first time President Pavel has faced issues related to his motorcycling passion. Last year, he found himself at the center of controversy when he was photographed riding a motorcycle without a helmet, for which he later issued a public apology.
A former high-ranking NATO general, President Pavel was elected as the Czech Republic’s president in March 2023. His fondness for motorcycles has been well-documented, including a notable trip shortly after his inauguration when he rode a motorbike to Bavaria, Germany. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he shared his enthusiasm: “The sun, the wind at your back and the strengthening of neighborly relations with your Bavarian friends. Why not combine the pleasant with the useful.”
Thursday’s accident is the latest in a series of minor injuries the Czech leader has sustained during his recreational activities. In April, he suffered a minor laceration near his eyebrows while firing a rifle equipped with an optic at a shooting range.
Despite these incidents, President Pavel’s adventurous spirit and dedication to his hobbies continue to be a prominent aspect of his public persona. As he recovers from his recent mishap, his office reassures the public that the president’s injuries are minor and that he will soon return to his duties.
